DirecTV is the giant of Satellite TV business where as Verizon FiOS TV is a new comer into the cable TV business but is quite a big name in the telecom industry. Due to the increase in competition DirecTV fights to remain number one in the satellite TV business while the newcomer Verizon moves it pawns towards grabbing the market share with its FiOS TV package.
Coming to the pricing strategy of Verizon, it is pretty clear and simple. It bears one package i.e., the FiOS TV Premier package that comes for USD 47.99 per month. It includes around 200 channels containing TNT, USA, MTV, ESPN, CNN, Discovery etc. Even local channels like ABC, CBS and NBC can also be viewed under this package. The DirecTV promotes several packages with various options that start from USD 29.99 for the family package of DirecTV and the Premier package for USD 105 per month being the highest priced package. Hi definition programming is an area where these both big wigs can be compared with. Due to the craze for latest technologies for flat screens and plasma's, buyers are more interested in HD. DirecTV offer 130 channels in HD, which are mostly, pay per view channels never the less making it self number one in terms of numbers of HD channels that is offered. While Verizon FiOS HD is very competitive in New York area but looses it competition to DirecTV at rest of the places as HD is not added to FiOS channels.
